Unattended distributional training can shift phoneme boundaries

چکیده
Abstract Listeners are sensitive to speech sounds’ probability distributions. Distributional training (DT) studies with adults typically involve conscious activation of phoneme labels. We show that distributional exposure can shift existing boundaries (Spanish /e/–/i/) pre-attentively. Using a DT paradigm involving two bimodal distributions we assessed listener's neural discrimination across three sounds, showing pre-to-post-test improvement for the adjacent sounds fell into different clusters trained distribution than those one cluster. Upon unattended an intricate stimulus set, listeners thus relocate native boundaries. whether also works category creation establishing duration contrast), where it has methodological advantages over usual unimodal-versus-bimodal paradigm. yielded greater effect /e/–/i/ boundary contrast creation. It seems second-language contrasts similar ones might be easier acquire new contrasts.

Detection of Phoneme Boundaries Using Spiking Neurons
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) is an area where the task is to assign the correct phoneme or word sequence to an utterance. The idea behind the ASR segment-based approach is to treat one phoneme as a whole unit in every respect, in contrast with the framebased approach where it is divided into equal-sized, smaller chunks. Doing this has many advantages, but also gives rise to some new probl...

Listeners heard an ambiguous /f-s/ in nonword contexts where only one of /f/ or /s/ was legal (e.g., frul/*srul or *fnud/snud). In later categorisation of a phonetic continuum from /f/ to /s/, their category boundaries had shifted; hearing -rul led to expanded /f/ categories, -nud expanded /s/. Thus phonotactic sequence information alone induces perceptual retuning of phoneme category boundarie...

متن کاملPrecision of phoneme boundaries derived using hidden Markov models
Some phoneme boundaries correspond to abrupt changes in the acoustic signal. Others are less clear-cut because the transition from one phoneme to the next is gradual. This paper compares the phoneme boundaries identified by a large number of different alignment systems, using different signal representations and Hidden Markov Model structures. The variability of the different boundaries is anal...
متن کاملThe discrimination of speech sounds within and across phoneme boundaries.
In listening to speech, one typically reduces the number and variety of the many sounds with which he is bombarded by casting them into one or another of the phoneme categories that his language allows. Thus, a listener will identify as b, for example, quite a large number of acoustically different sounds. Although these differences are likely to be many and various, some of them will occur alo...
